Home-baked dog cookies!

I used to be very skeptical when it comes to home-made (baked) dog treats. These are increasingly popular nowadays and there are already plenty of websites or even books where you can find delicious recipes for your furry friends.

Delicious, that’s the thing, but are they really good for dogs? As we are choosing for the grain free diet for our dogs, I was always taken aback how freely all the recipes call for the whole-wheat flour in the big amounts. That has been always discouraging me from giving them such treats. However, as I love to cook and I love my dogs and I know they love treats, I decided to give it a go and modify some of the recipes.

I read a lot about the influence of the grains on dogs’ digestive system. My research confirms it, they are not the best for dogs. However, most of the dog food contains them. Also there are grains that are more digestible than others.  Given the fact that dogs are not true carnivores but opportunistic feeder and can digest easily grains that have been processed by grinding and cooking I prepared dog cookies. To be fare, it is also good to keep in mind, it is a treat, not the main course for them, so a bit of grain can’t make such harm.

To make the things better I substituted the whole wheat flour with the rice one which is better digestible and more over is gluten-free.

I’ve added oats, which are well known to have a positive influence on the bowls movement regulation, especially for older dogs.  They are also good source of fiber. What else? Peanut butter of course :)

I was lucky enough to get customized dog-cookies forms:

And then mixed all mentioned ingredients together:

Roll out the dough:

And placed them onto the baking tray:

40 minutes in the oven, 180 degrees and they are ready! Make sure they are cooled well before serving!

Hope your pooh will enjoy :)
